Secretary General

Chris Shen, Class of 2021

Esteemed Directors, Student Officers, Delegates & Guests — a warm welcome from Shanghai American School Pudong to the 9th annual edition of SHASMUN!

We are, without a doubt, living in a peculiar time in human history. For the past nine years of SHASMUN, however, our delegates and student officers have eagerly sought to look beyond the façade of the contemporary — and this year will be no different. As we reflect on the past, journey in the annals of time, and examine issues that are seemingly niche, it is the hope of our Secretariat team that you all emerge from the conference with a better grasp of “The Butterfly Effect.”

This will be my sixth and last SHASMUN, a conference has been an irreplaceable part of my middle and high school years. SHASMUN has been a growing point where I have come back year after year as a delegate, student officer, and now, Secretariat member. As your Executive Secretary General this year, I assure you all that our team is doing all that we can to deliver the conference that you have come to expect from our school: where constructivism triumphs, leadership fosters mentorship and development, and students of all ages and backgrounds converge, learn and converse.

Once again, welcome to SHASMUN IX. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you all this November!

Deputy Secretary General

Andy Sofia, Class of 2022

Esteemed directors, distinguished student officers, passionate delegates, and guests:

Welcome to SHASMUN IX! My name is Andy Sofia, and it is my pleasure to serve as your Deputy Secretary-General this year. My first SHASMUN inspired me to take action on global issues, and it sparked my passion for international relations and the program. Since then, I have had the opportunity to attend numerous conferences around the world, which helped me forge long-lasting friendships. This year I am fully committed to bringing my passion and experience to SHASMUN IX. No matter if you are a MUN newcomer or veteran, I hope that you leave SHASMUN with a willingness to combat injustices and a compassionate mindset. After what the world has experienced with COVID-19, I believe events like SHASMUN could contribute to instilling unity and trust among us.

I look forward to seeing all of you in November!

Deputy Secretary General

Edward Huang, Class of 2022

Distinguished directors, honorable student officers and esteemed delegates,

Welcome to SHASMUN IX!

My name is Edward Huang, and I am a junior at Shanghai American School Pudong. Having attended the past five SHASMUNS – as a chair, delegate, and admin – I am honored to return and serve as a Deputy Secretary General of the Executive Branch. For many, including myself, SHASMUN has served as a stepping stone for personal growth: a place where new delegates find their voice, experienced delegates reignite their passion, and all are inspired. As a member of the secretariat, I promise to do everything in my power to uphold the level of constructiveness and professionalism that enables that to happen.

I look forwards to meeting you all in November – where we will examine the relationship between history and current world issues, and scrutinize the “butterfly effects” plaguing our world.

Once again, welcome to SHASMUN.

Deputy Secretary General

Sherissa Wu , Class of 2022

Welcome to SHASMUN IX!

My name is Sherissa Wu, and it is my honor to serve as one of your Deputy Secretaries Generals of the Executive Branch for this year’s conference. My Model UN journey started in the fifth grade, when I was part of the admin staff in SHASMUN’s Special Conference. Now, over five years and fifteen conferences later, I can confidently say that MUN is a program that inspires in all its participants a passion for global issues and a desire to find compromise in the construction of a better world. In light of recent events that have both shocked and deeply impacted the entire globe, the SHASMUN conference’s ability to unfailingly foster international collaboration and meaningful discussion has never been more timely and more essential. It is my hope that delegates, chairs, and directors will all emerge from the SHASMUN experience having learned rewarding lessons about themselves and about the larger crises we continue to face today.
