Alexis Yang, Class of 2020
Honorable directors, student officers, and delegates,
Welcome to SHASMUN VIII! My name is Alexis Yang and it is my utmost honor to serve as your Secretary General. Over the last six years, I have had the privilege of watching SHASMUN evolve through multiple lenses, from being a page to now a member of the secretariat. SHASMUN VIII will be my seventh and final SHASMUN, and I promise to uphold the level of diplomacy, professionalism, and inclusiveness that once allowed me to expand my knowledge of the world and forge new friendships. I truly hope that it can do the same for younger delegates. MUN embodies a spirit beyond passing resolutions or winning best delegate— one that values compassion and care for others— one that we hope to foster at SHASMUN. We are excited to have so many of you join us, and I look forward to meeting you all in November!
Advisory Secretary General
Claire Lu, Class of 2020
To all directors, student officers and delegates — Welcome to SHASMUN VIII! My name is Claire Lu, and it is truly honor to serve as one of the Advisory Secretaries General. SHASMUN was the provenance of my MUN journey, sparking a passion that led me to regions all around the world as a delegate, student officer, and now as a member of the secretariat. SHASMUN has consistently fostered professionalism in debate and long-lasting friendships, setting the bar higher each year. At SHASMUN VIII, I am certain that the high caliber and collaborative nature of the conference will blossom once again through the active participation of experienced and inexperienced delegates alike.
I am excited for us to join at SHASMUN VIII — to examine the dangerous cycle of complacency that has plagued generations before us, to dissect some of the most pressing issues of our time, and to take action against inaction.
Deputy Secretary General
Chris Shen, Class of 2021
Distinguished Directors, Student Officers, Delegates, and Guests,
A warm welcome to SHASMUN VIII!
My name is Christopher Shen and it is my utmost honor to serve as one of the Deputies Secretary General of the eighth annual edition of this conference. I can still remember my first SHASMUN four years ago. Heading in as a first time delegate, it was at SHASMUN that IV that I found guiding figures — student officers, fellow delegates, and even members of the secretariat — that were extremely supportive towards developing me into a better debater, speaker, and writer throughout the course of the entire conference. Today, I can confidently say that SHASMUN upholds itself to a standard of constructiveness and fosters a community of thinkers who debate and speak thoughtfully and diplomatically. No matter where you will be coming from or who you will be representing, I am certain that SHASMUN will provide you an experience filled with tremendous growth, insightful debate and long lasting memories.
So, let us tear down the walls of our own complacency and open the door to a better world.
I look forward to meeting you all in November, and once again, welcome to SHASMUN.

James Li, Class of 2020
Distinguished directors, esteemed student officers and passionate delegates:
SHASMUN was my first ever MUN conference. I can still remember how my chest tightened as I saw the intimidating rows of metal chairs and how heavy the placard felt in my hand as I tried raising it for the first time. Nonetheless, the patient, cordial chairs and enthusiastic, dedicated delegates came to my rescue. Very soon, I was drawn into the intriguing debate and eloquent speeches.
Looking back at it in senior year after attending numerous conferences around the world, I realized how lucky I was to have my first MUN experience here—right at home. At SHASMUN we take pride in this constructive community that offered many new delegates like myself the chance to grow. We encourage only supportive speeches and amendments to construct a professional and insightful debate and frown upon those who seek to disrupt for selfish pleasure. We foster close relationships between chairs and delegates, where developing individuals are able to receive immediate assistance and do not feel afraid to try. We seek to develop delegates that are open minded, knowledgeable and well spoken on global issues who have the dedication to fight this trend of complacency in the modern society.
It is my utmost honor to be able to serve as your advisory secretary general, to be given trust to up hold its high standards and give back to the conferences that sparked my passion for the program and for international relations.
