Dear fellow directors, student officers, and delegates,

Welcome to SHASMUN VIII! My name is Michael Crachiolo and it is my honor to serve as one of the co-directors for this conference. I firmly believe in the transformational powers that public speaking and debate events can have on students. Indeed, I participated in high school and university debate competitions myself; through these, I became a more confident person and a better critical thinker. As a teacher, I have been involved with MUN since 2010 starting in Mexico, then on to the USA, and now China. I have seen the positive impact this activity can have on students; they indeed become more aware of global issues and more empathetic people in general. That being said, I am hoping that SHASMUN VIII: The Complacency Crisis will get students to go beyond the standard fare MUN arguments and resolutions that gloss over the complexity of real issues and real solutions. I urge all delegates to do detailed research and think of novel, actionable solutions that will actually add something new to the conversation instead of rehashing canned ideas. I am confident that the topics selected for this year’s conference will promote this kind of thinking! Good luck and many thanks for taking the time to visit us at Shanghai American School, Pudong.

I would like to extend a special welcome to those Delegates who are attending this conference for the first time. I am confident that this year’s theme, The Complacency crisis, will provide an excellent opportunity for all of you to explore current global issues from different lenses and perspectives in order to engage in meaningful and productive conversations and debates. I am looking forward to welcoming you to Shanghai in November.

Directors, Student Officers, and Delegates, welcome to SHASMUN VIII! We invite you to engage in colorful discourse and debate, breaking through the lens of complacency, thinking deeper on ethical solutions, to make our world a better place. It is our hope you all will take away a greater confidence in understanding, and taking action, to relieve the pressure of contemporary social perils. Our honorable secretariat, in collaboration with directors and peers, have built upon our legacy of sophisticated conference design to bring you the cerebral exercise that is The Complacency Crisis, SHASMUN VIII.
